DNA Traceable Pork from Sturgeon Valley Farms

DNA traceable pork is now available in Alberta. The product branded "Sturgeon Valley Farms Premium Alberta Pork" is an exclusive joint venture between the meat processor Sturgeon Valley Farms with the grocery chain Freson Bros. The pork is now available in all 15 Freson Bros. stores in Alberta.

Using the new system, (called DNA TraceBack) DNA samples are taken from the Sturgeon Valley hogs at the processing plant and then at the retail store. The samples are then sent to the IdentiGEN laboratory in Lawrence, Kansas where their unique DNA identifiers trace back to the individual hog and verify product origin. Using DNA to trace meat is fairly new to Canada but it has been used in Europe for over a decade, and is becoming more common in the U. S. as well. Look to see more DNA traceable meat as more export markets begin to require it.
